Biography

António Sampaio da Nóvoa, Full Professor at the Institute of Education, University of Lisbon, has served as Honorary Rector of the institution since 2014. He was the Rector of the University of Lisbon from 2006 to 2013.

He was Portugal’s Ambassador to UNESCO (Paris) from 2018 to 2021.
He holds a PhD in Educational Sciences from the University of Geneva (1986) and a PhD in History from the University of Paris IV – Sorbonne (2006).

He has been awarded honorary doctorates (Doctor Honoris Causa) by:

  • The University of Algarve (2015)
  • The University of Brasília (2015)
  • The Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies (2016)
  • The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2017)
  • The Federal University of Santa Maria (2019)
  • The University of São Paulo (2021)

He is an Honorary Professor at the Macau Polytechnic Institute, China (2018).

He served as President of ISCHE – the International Standing Conference for the History of Education, from 2000 to 2003. In 2014, he was awarded the University of Coimbra Prize.

He has been a Corresponding Academic Member of the International Academy of Portuguese Culture since 2015 and a Full Academician of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences since 2022.

From 2022 to 2024, he was a Member of the Council of State.
